The primary medium used here is watercolor and gouache on Strathmore 500 series plate finish bristol paper. This is a highly unconventional technique, and it allows me to make changes to the watercolor because the paint "floats" on the paper and is easier to remove than traditional watercolor papers. The older work (see ARCHIVE portfolio) is generally in oil or alkyd on linen or wood. I will return to these media again one day, utilizing the same approach in technique.

Once I understand what I want to accomplish in a piece, I attack the paper with abandon, flicking paint here and there, wiping out areas and then adding in color, then more wiping and adding, until I get what I want. I let the paint do a lot of the work, letting colors and textures run or fuse together. I strive to keep it spontaneous, with little laboring over technique.

If this is accomplished smoothly with little fussing, I win, at least until the next painting.
